Plastic Pollution (Part 01-Know Your Plastics)

As I promised in the article on waste management, iConservationist is ready to share another chapter related to waste management but, specifically focused on plastic pollution. Hence this is a broader topic there will be two parts of this article series. Today, I am ready to present you with the first part – “Know Your Plastics”. What is plastic? Plastic is a wide range of synthetic and semi-synthetic organic polymer of high molecular mass. It is malleable thus can be moulded into solid objects. Most plastics are not pure polymer products and contain other substances.  Uses of plastic Source:  https://ourworldindata.org/plastic-pollution The packaging is the most dominant use of plastic. According to a study conducted in 2015, it shows this usage as 42% of the primary plastic production. 19% of the rest, is utilised in the building and construction sector. In our day to day life, most of the appliances and items we come across with have a significant contribution from plastic....

Flight Adaptations of Birds

IConservationist believes that awareness is the key to successful conservation. To conserve what is in our nature, it is important to understand its life forms. Birds are one of the magnificent creations that Mother Earth has created. Today’s aviation is predominantly inspired by birds. These natural aviators are evolved with many features that help them in flight. The flying process of a bird itself is an amazing phenomenon in nature. How could these animals stay in the air? How do they maintain their balance and posture? How do they handle the air pressure? More than everything, how did these creatures have the ability to incorporate with the fundamentals of aerodynamics? As an answer to all these questions, today iConservationist will be discussing about flight adaptations that birds possess relative to the main organ systems in the bird body. 1. Digestive System  Birds do not possess teeth. Teeth are heavy and it affects the flight by making it difficult to the bird to keep its...

Biodiversity; in Sri Lankan Context

Image Source: Canva https://www.projectaware.org/news/united-biodiversity-together-against-plastic-pollution The variety of life in all its forms including plants, animals and microbes that exist and their interactions with various physical components such as air, water and soil is known as the  biodiversity.  The variety of interactions taking place only among the biological components of an ecosystem is known as the  biological diversity . Biodiversity is important when it comes to the balance of natural eco systems. We depend on our eco systems and their services hence, understanding the importance of these interactions is essential to maintain the sustainability of life. This year, the  World Environment Day (05 th  of June) celebrates the “ Biodiversity ” of this planet. As Sri Lankans, let us take a closer look at our island’s biodiversity.  https://www.jagranjosh.com/general-knowledge/meaning-of-biodiversity-1440148279-1 Sri Lanka along with the West...
